The journey to this point started a few years ago. I was living in Paris in an area with a fabulous neighbourhood street market. Every week refrigerated lorries would arrive from Scrabster and Oban delivering wonderful Scottish seafood. Why did I have to move to France to be able to buy fresh Scottish langoustines, crabs and scallops?.
The nagging unease has grown in recent years watching the experience of Scottish farmers including my sister-in-law. Lamb prices are at an all time low and many farmers are struggling to make a living yet the supermarket shelves are filled with New Zealand lamb.
On a recent trip to Galloway, a local pub in the middle of farming country was even offering a special of Barnsley lamb. When Scotland is such a fantastic natural larder, why is it so hard for us to access local food ?.
That's what we decided to find out, so from Burns Night to St Andrews Day my family has vowed to only to eat Scottish.
I would encourage you to join us and share the experience. It is hardly a hardship.
With world famous beef, chicken, pork, lamb and some of the best seafood in the world all originating here, Eating for Scotland should be a joy. In France, Italy and throughout mainland Europe local food provokes fierce pride. We need to share that enthusiasm and passion.
If we demand good seasonal local produce, the big retailers will change their buying and distribution patterns cutting prices and boosting local production.
The boom in Farmers Markets and Farm Shops here in Scotland proves shoppers are fed up and want change. Let's help make it happen.
